Report of week ending 10 July

Three wins and three defeats for the Saturday League sides.

T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division.  A feature of the 1st XI’s performances this season to date had been their good bowling and fielding but this deserted them on Saturday against visitors High Roding 1st XI who scored freely in the first 25 overs with four catches dropped and they eventually reached 259-6 in their 45 overs, Steve Bolland taking 4-40 in his last game before going to Vietnam. Openers Ben Francis (34) and Andy Impey last out on 87 gave Rayleigh a solid start but after that wickets fell regularly and the home side subsided to 180 all out to lose by 79 runs.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2.  The 2nd XI visited Hornchurch Athletic 1st and batting first were all out for 170, Danny Frost (37) top scoring. The Midweek XI hosted Maldon in the Warsop T20 League. The visitors batted first and totalled 149-5. Ben Francis (35) and Jon Cook (34) kept Rayleigh up with the required run rate but needing five to win off the last over the bowler bowled a wide which hit the wicketkeeper’s helmet behind him to give Rayleigh victory in a most unusual way.
