Two wins and four defeats for our six Saturday League sides. However, a highlight was the 1st XI victory which ensured their position in the Premier Division for next season and another was a 38 ball hundred for Sam Verrinder in a friendly against a touring side.
T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division. The 1st XI hosted bottom of the table High Roding and batting first scored 247-9, Jason Ox (89), Joel Barnett (40), Will Nolde (33) and Ben Francis (31) leading the scoring. This target looked well beyond a mainly very young High Roding side and they were bowled out for 75, Luke Sullivan (4-14), Ian Bryant (4-24) and Matt Gilmore (2-11) taking the wickets. This result means the 1st XI finished in 8th place and will play in the Premier Division in 2018.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2. The 2nd XI visited Eastwood 1st XI who batted first and benefitting from a number of dropped catches scored 209 all out, Dan Frost taking 4-55 and Elliot Ward 2-43. In reply Rayleigh were bowled out for 111, Steven Lynch 28 in three overs and Kalpesh Patel (28) top scoring. They finish 4th in the Division.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. The 3rd XI entertained high flying Navestock 1st XI who batted first and were bowled out for 188, Will Wheeler taking 5-39. Rayleigh chased this target valiantly Will Wheeler (33), Darren Smith (30) and Matt Bumpus (27) leading the scoring but fell agonisingly short by 7 runs to finish 6th in the Division.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI travelled to bottom of the table Burnham Sports 2nd XI, who batting first scored 104-10, Sam Levett taking 3-13, Nick Green 3-16 and Richard Mantell 2-14. Rayleigh passed this target for the loss of 4 wickets in the 22nd over, Brad Walker (35) and Nick Green (32) top scoring. They finish 5th in the Division.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8. Bottom of the table Willow Herbs 2nd XI came to play the 5th XI who batted first and scored 169-6, Owen Davies (49), Steve Rothon (37) and Sam Martin (36*). The visitors passed the target in the penultimate over for their first win of the season but the 5th XI were safe at 6th in the table.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. The 6th XI went to play Hornchurch Athletic 4th XI and batting first and put on 109 for the 1st wicket, David Cox (77) and Dave Turner (57) and finished on 181-6. The home side reached the target in the 34th over for the loss of 3 wickets.
Peartree (touring side from Southampton area) – 240-6 (40 overs), Tom Lopez 4-24
Rayleigh 232-10 (38.5 overs), Sam Verrinder (104) scoring 50 off 20 balls and 100 off 38 balls including 7 fours and 10 sixes, Steven Lynch 31
A look at the fixture list for the weekend suggested it would be a difficult week as most of the teams were playing high flying opposition and so it proved with heavy defeats for all six Saturday League sides. However, both the 3rd XI and 5th XIs who could have been relegated in their respective Divisions both avoid the drop due to results elsewhere.
T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division. The 1st XI travelled to Goresbrook 1st XI who batted first and amassed 290-4 with S Barwick scoring 154 not out. At 73-2, Ben Francis (44) it looked as though Rayleigh might make a respectable score in response but the introduction of Ochwo (9-27) into the attack signalled a dramatic collapse and they were bowled out for 102 in the 24th over. This result means the 1st XI must win in the final week to avoid relegation to Division 1.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2. The 2nd XI entertained top of the table Great Waltham 1st XI and scored 168-8, Chris Frost (48) and Adam Krise (42*), which target the visitors passed in the 29th over for the loss of 2 wickets, D Clout 114*.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. The 3rd XI visited Rainham 2nd XI who batted first and scored 216-8, Jai Patel taking 5-22. In reply Rayleigh struggled against tight bowling and fielding and ended on 99-7 in their 45 overs to lose by 117 runs.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI hosted Galleywood 2nd XI, who at one stage were 103-8 but an unbroken 9th wicket partnership took the visitors to 205-8, Tom Lopez 3-24 and Richard Mantell (2-21) the pick of the bowlers. In reply Rayleigh only managed to score 107 all out, Matt Walker (34*) top scoring.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8. The 5th XI went to play Canvey Island 2nd XI who batting first scored 148-9 Sam Lowe taking 2-12. This target proved beyond the 5th XI who ended on 79 all out with only Sam Lowe (29) making any impression on the bowling.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. Bentley 4th XI were the visitors to the 6th XI, who batted first and scored 109-10, Dave Turner (22). Bentley reached the target in the 23rd over for the loss of 2 wickets.
The Rayleigh tour to Norfolk included 4 matches – including close defeats against Garbolisham (1 wicket), Norwich (6 wickets), Eight Ash Green (15 runs) and a drawn match against Old Buckenham. Batting highlights included Darren Smith (38), Mark Stratton (49 & 80*), Jon Cook (90), Steve Lynch (40). Bowling highlights – Rebecca Holyoak (3-20), Phil Hammond (3-43).
The Sunday XI had an entertaining friendly at Little Baddow who scored 221-9 from their 40 overs with Toby Turner taking 4 wickets. In reply Rayleigh won in the 36th over with 71 from Brad Walker and a quickfire 33 from Sam Verrinder.
Two wins and four defeats this week in league games for Rayleigh and 3 other friendly matches played.
T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division. The 1st XI travelled to Rettendon and batting first scored 169-8 with Ian Turnbull (35) and Callum Ginbey (25) the leading run scorers. In reply Rettendon only managed 123 all out with Ian Bryant (4-34) and Ian Turnbull (3-44) the pick of the bowlers.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2. The 2nd XI hosted Gorebrook 2nd XI and bowled them out for just 86 with Chris Frost taking 3-15 and Richard Abley 3-19. The 2nd XI made hard work of reaching this small target and finally won by 2 wkts with Chris Frost scoring 13 from 60 balls, Steve Lynch 7 from 61 balls and top scorer Richard Abley with 16.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. Writtle 2nd XI played host to the 3rd XI and scored 212-0. The Rayleigh reply was 152 all out with Steve Gosling (30), Sam Law (23) and Colin Mayor (21) the leading batsmen.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI hosted Wickham 1st XI who scored 207-9 in their 45 overs with John Wright taking 3-51. The 4th XI scored 160-8 in reply with Richard Mantell (30) and Brad Walker (29) the main batsmen.
T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8. The 5th XI visited Rainham 3rd XI and batting first scored only 66 on a very damp track. Skipper Simon Lennox led the way with a patient 24 but had little support. The hosts passed this total in the 23rd over for the loss of only 1 wicket.
