Coaching and practice sessions 2022

Please see details of the arrangements for coaching and practice sessions for members for the coming season.

You will see that our usual arrangements at Fitzwimarc school have been severely curtailed. As a result, we have had to reorganize the way coaching is offered before Easter and make alternative arrangements elsewhere, set out below, the timings may not be as convenient as in earlier years. Please note that if these times are inconvenient or there are too many players at these sessions we will try to offer sessions at other schools on Saturday or Sunday afternoons but spaces are at a premium. The management committee will review this situation during the first two weeks of February.

All indoor sessions cost £2 to pay for hall hire.

Sad news

It was with great sadness that the Club learnt of the death of Brian Emmett in October 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Brian spent 7 years at the club at the end of the 1970’s through to 1985. He held prominent positions every year, from Youth Team manager in 1979, 2nd XI captain in 1980, 1st XI captain in 1981 & 1982 and finally Sunday XI captain between 1983 and 1985. The bare facts of Brian’s Rayleigh career read in excess of 1700 runs scored from 180 innings with a top score of 66 and 250 wickets from 1300 overs at the highly respectable average of under 17 runs per wicket. His best season with the ball occurred in 1982 when he took 69 wickets at an average of 12.92 and claimed the Bowling Cup with figures of 8-65. What was more remarkable was that he had changed his bowling action that very season, replacing his military medium pace with slow right arm. Brian often defeated batsmen with his wily use of flight and lack of pace, but certainly not with off-spin as he never spun a ball all season !! He was also a key member of the Mid-Essex Division 2 winning side in 1984.

Brian was a true character in every sense of the word. He had a multitude of stories that would captivate and amuse (though none that can be repeated here !) especially the younger players fresh out of school/college. He was certainly in his element during the 1981 tour of Devon reducing poor Malcolm Sparrow to tears over a fake flat tyre “incident” and during the 1984 tour to Bath. He always seemed to have a permanent tan and on one occasion was consoled by the home umpire at Chignal who apologised for having to give him out lbw. Unfortunately the player in question given out was none other than our local Pakistani newsagent Mohammed Khaki !!

Brian’s true legacy though was with his development and mentoring of a host of young players who have gone on to serve Rayleigh CC with great distinction. Phil Wolff, Andy Thurogood, John Wright, Willie Leadbeater and Tony Catling were all taken under his wing and very much looked upon Brian as a mentor/father figure at the time. His great belief in their talent and ability was without doubt paramount in them not only becoming major players at the Club but probably ensuring they remained at Rayleigh CC in those formative years. At the time Rayleigh was well served with a number of senior players who will always intrinsically be associated with Brian, including Chris Baker, Jim Harding, Ralph Adler, Stuart Pinkerton and Harry Walker, Brad’s dad. It’s fair to say that their like will probably never be seen again and in the subsequent 35 years certainly never replicated. Brian was also highly instrumental in the staging of the popular and successful traditional summer Barn Dances held at David Pinkerton’s Lubards farm where over 350 people would be in attendance.

Some of us were fortunate enough to meet up with Brian and his son Darren when they popped over to watch the 3rd XI at Woodham Mortimer a few years back and it was great to see him once more as he had moved down to Cornwall over 20 years previously. He will be greatly missed.

Report of week ending 3 September

Two wins and four defeats for our six Saturday League sides. However, a highlight was the 1st XI victory which ensured their position in the Premier Division for next season and another was a 38 ball hundred for Sam Verrinder in a friendly against a touring side.

T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division.  The 1st XI hosted bottom of the table High Roding and batting first scored 247-9, Jason Ox (89), Joel Barnett (40), Will Nolde (33) and Ben Francis (31) leading the scoring. This target looked well beyond a mainly very young High Roding side and they were bowled out for 75, Luke Sullivan (4-14), Ian Bryant (4-24) and Matt Gilmore (2-11) taking the wickets. This result means the 1st XI finished in 8th place and will play in the Premier Division in 2018.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2.  The 2nd XI visited Eastwood 1st XI who batted first and benefitting from a number of dropped catches scored 209 all out, Dan Frost taking 4-55 and Elliot Ward 2-43.  In reply Rayleigh were bowled out for 111, Steven Lynch 28 in three overs and Kalpesh Patel (28) top scoring.  They finish 4th in the Division.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. The 3rd XI entertained high flying Navestock 1st XI who batted first and were bowled out for 188, Will Wheeler taking 5-39. Rayleigh chased this target valiantly Will Wheeler (33), Darren Smith (30) and Matt Bumpus (27) leading the scoring but fell agonisingly short by 7 runs to finish 6th in the Division.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI travelled to bottom of the table Burnham Sports 2nd XI, who batting first scored 104-10, Sam Levett taking 3-13, Nick Green 3-16 and Richard Mantell 2-14. Rayleigh passed this target for the loss of 4 wickets in the 22nd over, Brad Walker (35) and Nick Green (32) top scoring. They finish 5th in the Division.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8.  Bottom of the table Willow Herbs 2nd XI came to play the 5th XI who batted first and scored 169-6, Owen Davies (49), Steve Rothon (37) and Sam Martin (36*). The visitors passed the target in the penultimate over for their first win of the season but the 5th XI were safe at 6th in the table.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. The 6th XI went to play Hornchurch Athletic 4th XI and batting first and put on 109 for the 1st wicket, David Cox (77) and Dave Turner (57) and finished on 181-6. The home side reached the target in the 34th over for the loss of 3 wickets.

Midweek friendly:

Peartree (touring side from Southampton area) – 240-6 (40 overs), Tom Lopez 4-24

Rayleigh 232-10 (38.5 overs), Sam Verrinder (104) scoring 50 off 20 balls and 100 off 38 balls including 7 fours and 10 sixes, Steven Lynch 31

Report of Week ending 27 August

A look at the fixture list for the weekend suggested it would be a difficult week as most of the teams were playing high flying opposition and so it proved with heavy defeats for all six Saturday League sides. However, both the 3rd XI and 5th XIs who could have been relegated in their respective Divisions both avoid the drop due to results elsewhere.

T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division.  The 1st XI travelled to Goresbrook 1st XI who batted first and amassed 290-4 with S Barwick scoring 154 not out. At 73-2, Ben Francis (44) it looked as though Rayleigh might make a respectable score in response but the introduction of Ochwo (9-27) into the attack signalled a dramatic collapse and they were bowled out for 102 in the 24th over. This result means the 1st XI must win in the final week to avoid relegation to Division 1.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2.  The 2nd XI entertained top of the table Great Waltham 1st XI and scored 168-8, Chris Frost (48) and Adam Krise (42*), which target the visitors passed in the 29th over for the loss of 2 wickets, D Clout 114*.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. The 3rd XI visited Rainham 2nd XI who batted first and scored 216-8, Jai Patel taking 5-22. In reply Rayleigh struggled against tight bowling and fielding and ended on 99-7 in their 45 overs to lose by 117 runs.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI hosted Galleywood 2nd XI, who at one stage were 103-8 but an unbroken 9th wicket partnership took the visitors to 205-8, Tom Lopez 3-24 and Richard Mantell (2-21) the pick of the bowlers. In reply Rayleigh only managed to score 107 all out, Matt Walker (34*) top scoring.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8.  The 5th XI went to play Canvey Island 2nd XI who batting first scored 148-9 Sam Lowe taking 2-12. This target proved beyond the 5th XI who ended on 79 all out with only Sam Lowe (29) making any impression on the bowling.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. Bentley 4th XI were the visitors to the 6th XI, who batted first and scored 109-10, Dave Turner (22). Bentley reached the target in the 23rd over for the loss of 2 wickets.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI travelled to Southend to play Old Southendians and batting first scored 140-9, only Steve Gosling (36) mastering the bowling. The home side also struggled to score and with Nick Green taking 4-36 and Jai Patel 3-33 the finish was always likely to be tight. The home side had only one wicket left and still needed 10 runs to win but the last pair held out to spoil the cherished clean sweep of victories for the Club.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8.  The 5th XI entertained top of the Division South Woodham Ferrers 2nd XI, and batting first scored 183-7. This score was founded on 39 from Matt Verrinder and Steve Rothon, who continued his excellent recent form scoring an unbeaten 82. He also shared an unbeaten partnership of 59 with Sam Levett for the 8th wicket. Tight bowling by Aby Jose (4-43) and Mihir Patel (3-21) restricted the visitors to all out score of 158 to give Rayleigh victory by 25 runs.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. The 6th XI travelled to Margaretting to play Galleywood 3rd XI who batted first and scored 175-5 in their 40 overs, Gary Bush taking 2-42. Phil Wolff rolled back the years scoring 100 not out and supported by Dave Turner (29) led the team to victory by 6 wickets.

Friendly match. The 7th XI travelled to Hatfield Peverel to play Great Waltham 3rd XI who batted first and scored 227-5 in their 40 overs, Kuldeep Paik taking 3-26. The 7th XI were bowled out for 96, Jack Andrews (34).

The weekend had a marvellous start when the Club hosted a Women’s Soft Ball Cricket Festival sponsored by the ECB and Essex County Cricket Board.  Approximately 100 women and girls attended and played three friendly games on four pitches spread around the outfield. The standard of play was excellent even though quite a number had never played cricket before but hopefully some of them will come to play cricket next year in the Essex Women’s Leagues.

In addition to the cricket there were other entertainments including a Bouncy Castle, Bucking Bronco, Sumo Wrestling and Water Slide followed by a live band to end the evening. Everyone who came seemed to enjoy the evening and thanks to all the people who organised the event and who were supported by excellent catering and bar staff. A brilliant evening.
