Report of matches week ending 1 July : All five saturday League sides win

The 1st XI were at home to Writtle 1st XI and batting first totalled 220-8, Jon Cook (59) and Keith Sharp (55) leading the scoring. Writtle’s openers made an excellent start and the 1st XIs unbeaten record looked in danger but Ian Bryant (4-32) and Richard Abley (2-36) pegged the visitors back and they were eventually bowled out for 189

The 2nd XI travelled to second placed Rainham 1st XI who batted first and scored 162-6 in their 45 overs, Danny Frost taking 2-30. The 2nd XI were also unbeaten in the league this year and at 81 for 7, this record looked as though it would go but an excellent innings of 78 not out by opener Andy Impey saw the visitors home by 1 wicket.

The 3rd XI were away to East Hanningfield and Great Burstead 2nd XI who batting first totalled 168-9, John Stirk (4-48) and Adam Dudmish (2-20) being the main wicket takers. Rayleigh scored 172-2 to win by 8 wickets, Steve Adams (75*) and Martin Sanderson (42) top scoring.

The 4th XI were at home to Willow Herbs 2nd XI and batting first scored 203-6, Brad Walker (52) leading the scoring. The visitors were bowled out for 133, James Wratten taking 5-38.

The 5th XI entertained Bentley 4th XI at Purleigh. Batting first the 5th XI amassed 239-6, Tony Catling (64), Steven Lynch (42) and Paul Davies (28) being the main contributors. Bentley were bowled out for 79, Neville Dunn taking 4-21 and David James 4-41.

The Women & Girls XI were at home to Great Waltham, who batted first and were bowled out for 48, Jodie Billet taking 5-10. Rayleigh passed this score with the loss of 3 wickets, Rebecca Holyoak 25 (retired) leading the scoring.

In contrast to the Saturday league teams, the friendly sides both struggled. The 6th (Dragons) XI were at home to a mature and experienced Botany Bay 5thXI from Enfield and were outclassed being bowled out for 63, which score the visitors passed without losing a wicket though it took them 27 overs to get there which was a tribute to some tight bowling by our much younger bowlers.

The 6th (Eagles) XI were at home to The Camel of Bethnal Green and had to spend 3/4 of an hour raking hay off the outfield!! Batting first The Camel scored 115 and with a number of adult fast bowlers reduced the Eagles to an all out total of 65.

Warsop Sunday League. The Sunday XI were away at Great Waltham and batting first scored 244-4, Ian Bryant 134* and Liam Druce 52 top scoring. In reply Great Waltham scored 245-9 winning off the last ball. Matt Gilmore taking 4-29.
