Report of weekend ending 9th September

 

Following the excitement and success of the league season, the Club played four friendly matches on Saturday.

A 1st XI entertained Goresbrook, who batted first and scored 214 all out. Marcus Cornish and Danny White both scored fifties in the Club’s reply and a four off the last ball of the match took Rayleigh to victory by 5 wickets in an enjoyable game.

A 3rd XI travelled to Thurrock 2nd and scored 185 in their innings, Adam Keeley (48) and Colin Mayor (30) to scoring. The home side passed this total for the loss of 6 wickets.

A 4th XI played at Eastwood and batting first scored 219, Simon Harwood (66*) and Tony Catling (65) leading the scoring. They then bowled the home side out for 192, John Wright taking 3-24 and Brad Walker 3-45.

The 6th (Dragons) XI travelled to Chelmsford 6th XI for the second week in succession and batting first scored160-9, Adam Krise (29), Conor Slough (26) and Duncan Bond (25). With Chelmsford at 60-5 after 20 overs another victory looked in sight but a good sixth wicket stand took the home side close to their target and in another nail biting finish the number 11 batsman hit two fours to avenge last week’s result.

On Sunday the Under 13A XI played Westcliff on Sea Under 13 XI in the final of the South Essex District Under 13 competition. Westcliff scored 120 in their 20 overs. Matt Dobson (26* off 18 balls) and Max Jones (25*) got the team to the required run rate at the half way stage but against accurate bowling and good fielding Rayleigh fell short by 6 runs. Nevertheless it was a good performance and they were a credit to the Club. A fuller report is in the Colt’s section.

Reports of Under13 semi-final and final

South Essex District Under 13 semi-final : 2 September
   

After a push to play outstanding games, and with further adjudications from the league, Rayleigh qualified for the semi-finals as runners up in the Eastern section to Westcliff.  Their reward was a game away to Wickford – winners of the Western section.  Wickford won the toss on a sunny Sunday morning and elected to field.  Against some accurate early bowling, the top 4 struggled to get the innings going except for Matt Dobson whose 27 not out (including 1 massive 6 narrowly missing my car!) proved ultimately decisive.  It was left to Josh Jones 13 not out and Conor Slough 11 (both at better than a run a ball) to increase the rate and help push Rayleigh up to 97 – but would that be enough?
Two early wickets – 1 each for Josh and Matt – combined with a tight line had Wickford at 8-2.  Further good spells from Max and Mihir then had Wickford at 40-6 with Mihir taking a match best 3-19 and another wicket for Max.  Behind the run rate, Wickford tried to push on but more good bowling from Henry 1-13, Harry Mole 1-5 and Owen meant that despite a big last over, Wickford fell 10 runs short and Rayleigh had qualified for the final.

South Essex District Under 13 final : 9 September

 And so to Woodside…… The final saw another beautifully sunny day (where was all this in June?).  Rayleigh welcomed back Craig Smith and Alec Bateman into the team and there was a debut for Adam Bailey.  Westcliff batted first and made an imposing looking 120-5.  The boys all bowled well enough, but Westcliff’s batting was strong and there were some unfortunate drops and slips in the field.  Pick of the bowlers were Conor Slough 2-23 and Josh Jones 1-20 and there were 2 neat stumpings from Joe Barnett.  We were going to have to score our highest total of the season to win but hope sprang eternal.

Max Jones led the way with a typically neat 25 not out at nearly a run a ball.  This laid the foundation for Matt Dobson to come up trumps again with a stunning innings of 26 not out off only 18 balls and we were now in with a chance.  Josh Jones (9) and Conor Slough(18) kept us up with the rate, scoring at a run a ball.  The rest of the boys put in a big effort, swinging big and running hard but Rayleigh fell an agonising 6 runs short in the end.
The boys did themselves and the club proud and the game was played in a good spirit but ultimately we were left second best.  Roll on the indoor season in November and here’s hoping for a better outdoor season in both a cricketing and weather sense next year.

Rayleigh u13B vs. SOSEMT u13B

Team: Joe Peppiatt, Jordan Jacobs, Callum Bishop, Alec Bateman (capt), Jamie Coleman (w/k), David Watts, Adam Bailey, Liam Harrold, Cameron MacDonald, David Wood.

The final League game of the season, re-arranged like so many others. The team was mainly old faces with a couple of new folks who had not played much earlier on. The captain was due to be James Buckley but he didn’t turn up. I was told later that this was because he had not received a call during the week so he had assumed he was not playing. That will teach me to tell someone a whole week in advance that they were in the team.
Anyway Alec was selected to captain the 10 man team and planned to bat first if he won the toss. He didn’t but the opposition put us in anyway. So far so good.

Wickford u13B vs. Rayleigh u13B

Team: Callum Bishop, Adam Fitzgerald, Joe Peppiatt, Jordan Jacobs, James Buckley (capt.), Callum Bond, Alec Bateman, Joe Barnett (w/k), David Watts, Harry Donoghue, Jess Walker, Ben Hart.

A re-arranged League game away at Wickford where we lost heavily in the pre-season friendly. Our team was quite different from last week’s – only one A team regular and an under 11. By a combination of incompetence and luck 12 players turned up with one needing to be away by 11 to go to a pre-booked show.

Rayleigh u13B vs. Pegasus & Corringham u13B

Team: Joe B., Craig S., Joe P. (capt.), Liam H., Harry D., Adam B., David W., Conor S., Max J., Josh J.

 

Originally a home game for us the fixture was played in away in order to get a game in. And Corringham was a sunny, welcoming sight after so many abandoned games.

 

Joe P was captain for the day, his second match in that role. The team was quite different to what would have ben our normal B team due to many being away on holiday, at the Olympics or just not being available. As a result we had a 2 District players and 3 A team regulars present.

 

I did check with the opposition on the day and they also had some A team players. Even so I asked Joe P to give the B team players priority.

Report of Under 13As v Rankins U13s : 19 July

Score: Rayleigh (64-3) bt Rankins (60-9) by 7 wickets
 
Finally some cricket at last!  Rayleigh were playing catch-up in midweek, re-scheduled game against Rankins.  On a beautiful summers evening, Rankins won the toss and decided to bat.  Josh and Matt opened as usual and both bowled well with Josh picking up 2 wickets.  This included a fine take by Joe behind the stumps – one of 3 in the match.  Conor and Mihir then came on and kept the scoring down, with Conor picking up 2 wickets and 2 maidens in his 3 over spell and Mihir bowling his dangerous namesake and effecting a run out as well.  Every other outfield player got a bowl, with wickets for Harry, Henry and Craig as Rayleigh restricted Rankins to 60-9 from their 20 overs.
In reply, Max and Joe put on 45 for the opening wicket through some sensible batting and excellent running as they chased the winning target of 61.  There then followed a little wobble as first Max went for 13, quickly followed by Craig and Joe for a top score of 18.  It was left to Matt and Conor to see the team home with just over 2 overs to spare.
So, another excellent win.  Every outfield player got a bowl and there were seasons best bowling performances from Conor, Calum, Craig and Henry.  Joe took 3 excellent catches behind the timbers and then put Rayleigh in sight of the winning line with Max, who went past 100 runs for the season in the process.  Hopefully the weather will relent, and enable us to squeeze in the final 2 outstanding games and possibly qualify for the end of season play-offs.

Under 13As v Old Southendians & Southchurch U13As

Score: Rayleigh (92-4) beat OSS & S (91-5) by 6 wickets
 
On a breezy, sunny Sunday morning Conor won the toss and elected to field.  With Matt and Mihir missing, this game gave Harry Donoghue the chance to make his first appearance for the A team this season.  The Jones boys opened the bowling and both put in a good but wicketless spell each.  Harry Donoghue then ran out the dangerous opener.  Conor and Harry Mole came on as 1st change, and Harry in particular bowled really well taking 2 wickets in the process.  Henry and Owen were next, and both did a sterling job with Henry getting amongst the wickets again.  In sharing the remaining overs, Harry D and Owen kept the bowling tight leaving Josh to bowl the final over and getting a well deserved wicket.  OSS & S had posted a very respectable 91-5 at the close but would this be enough?
 
Max and Joe opened the batting against some good, quick opening bowling.  With some trademark excellent, quick running and good shots, they posted 61 for the 1st wicket off only 11 overs, setting a great platform for the others.  Joe was 1st out for 21; clean bowled and 2 balls later a second wicket fell with Craig being adjudged LBW for 2.  Skipper Conor came in at No 4 and hit 15 from 12 balls to give further momentum to the innings.  However a mix up with Max (20) and an injudicious swipe across the line to a low ball saw both go quickly.  Despite a little wobble, Josh and Callum Bishop saw the team home with an over to spare, posting a winning 92-4.
 
This was another excellent win against a good team.  No dropped catches, some consistent bowling, calm batting and excellent running all helped.  Eight boys got a bowl.  Harry Mole had a season’s best bowling for him and it was good to see Callum coming in at number 5.  Well done to all.

Under 15Bs win first League game

Rayleigh Under 15Bs got their League season under way at last on Monday but due to other commitments only had eight players.

Losing the toss, Old Southendians and Southchurch U 15Bs asked Rayleigh to bat. Craig Smith (24) and Joe Barnett (17) batted carefully and with some risky running between the wickets put on 45 for the first wicket in 12 overs to give the team an excellent start. All of the team batted and the innings finished on 75-6. All the opposition outfield players bowled but their best bowler, who took 5-10 didn’t bowl until the 12th over!

Josh Jones and Conor Slough took 2 wickets in the first four overs to give the team a good start and all the other 5 outfield players bowled well for at least 2 overs to restrict OS&S U15Bs to an all out total of 68. Josh Jones 3-4, Conor Slough 2-13, Alec Bateman 3-6, Charlie Woodruff 2-17 were the main wicket takers.

An excellent all round performance to win by 7 runs.

Report of U13A game v Benfleet 17 June

Result: Rayleigh (112-9) beat Benfleet (92-3) by 20 runs
 
On a dry, sunny but very windy Sunday morning in Benfleet, Conor lost the toss and Rayleigh were inserted.  Rayleigh got off to a wobbly start, losing their first 3 wickets for just 15 runs.  This brought skipper Conor and Craig together.  Despite the occasional suicidal run, the boys batted sensibly and a mixture of big hits, quick singles and accumulation of extras saw them put on 53 for the 4th wicket in just over 7 overs.  Conor was run out on 22 and Craig soon followed for 11.  The following boys tried to push on and it was left to Mihir to strike a couple of lusty blows for 14 at the end which saw Rayleigh post a score of 112-9.
 
In reply, Benfleet were immediately pegged back by Josh, taking a wicket in the first over.  Matt backed this up with a maiden and did even better in his next, bowling Benfleet’s other opener.  When a run out followed, Benfleet were 9-3 in the 5th over.  Some good batting from the 2 Benfleet batsmen and some slightly wayward bowling in difficult, windy conditions saw them get back in the game.  However, their untimely retirements and 2 good last overs from Matt and Henry (picking up another wicket) meant that Rayleigh were safely home by 20 runs.
 
Everyone got a bat and 9 bowlers used so this was a real team effort.  Matt was the pick of the bowlers with 1-11 of 4 overs and skipper Conor weighed in with a top score of 22.  Three of the boys had seasons’ best batting (Mihir 14, Calum 5 not out, and Harry 2 not out) and there were no dropped catches again.Some momentum is building.
