2011 Season Info

Twelve wins but the 1st XI lose again and 3 other defeats

Bottom of the league Old Chelmsfordians were the visitors to Rawreth Lane and batting first totalled 191-9 again helped by a number of dropped catches, Mike Walsh taking 4-50. In yet another disappointing performance with the bat, the 1st XI were bowled out for 148, Matt Williams (43) top scoring. As a result Rayleigh replace OC’s at the bottom of the table

The 2nd XI match visited Rayleigh Fairview 2nd XI and batted first scoring 155-6, Chris Frost scoring 69*. Fairview scored 131-6 in reply, George Barker taking 3-45.

The 3rd XI went to Bentley 3rd XI and batting first scored 233-8, Richard Verrinder (75) and Alex Jones (47) top scoring. In reply the hosts scored 162-9, Paul Davies taking 4-34 and Adam Dudmish 3-39.

The 4th XI entertained Old Chelmsfordians 4th XI and batted first, John Wright (36), Matt Walker (34) and Nathan Healey (31) leading the scoring. and scored 162-5. The visitors scored 141, Mark Acraman taking 6-22.

Dropped catches cost the 5th XI dear when Little Baddow 3rd XI batted and scored 196-5. Rayleigh scored 153-7, Adam Keeley (81*) again top scoring .

The Saturday 6th XI Eagles travelled to West Mersea who batted first and scored 122, Sam Verrinder taking 3-13. Rayleigh passed this total for the loss of 3 wickets, Chris Slough (44) and Tom Peppiatt (23) leading the scoring.

 

The Saturday 6th XI Dragons travelled to Old Ignatians, Enfield who batted first on a slow wicket. Accurate bowling resticted the home side to an all out total of 64, Phil Hammond taking 3-13 and Luke Sullivan 2-6. Rayleigh struggled in reply but eventually reached 65-7, Murray Hall (21) leading the scoring.

The Sunday XI entertained New Calypsonians and batted first scoring 140 all out, Jason Ox 5o, Ian Bryant 27, steve Elsdon 27. New Calypsonians 137 all out, Ian Bryant 5-28, Liam Druce 3-29.

The Women & Girls XI batted first against visitors Maldon and scored 102all out, Rebecca Holyoak scoring 38 and Clare Fallis 22. Maldon scored 87-9 in reply, Sophie Lennox taking 2-9 off 4 overs to give the team a third league win this season.

Warsop T20 league. Rayleigh 134 all out Matt Williams 30 Jon Roworth 24. Wickford 90 all out, Jason Ox 6 for 7, Ian Bryant 2 -17. Rayleigh won by 44 runs.

Rayleigh U15A

Hadleigh Under 15B 133-9, Ben Read 2-11 and Mihir Patel 2-14. Rayleigh U15B 132-8 Steven Lynch 32 and Tom Peppiatt 26. Hadleigh won by 1 run.

Rayleigh Under13A 114-9, Max Jones 26*, Matt Dobson 25*.

Rayleigh B: 94 all out. Thurrock: 95 for 3 . Thurrock won by 7 wickets with three balls to spare.Hadleigh Under 13 86 all out Matt Dobson 3-6 and Josh Jones 3-11. Rayleigh won by 28 runs. 110-3 Christian Humphries 35 retired, Hugh Kirby 33. Basildon U15A 53 all out, Owen Davies 2-8 and Sam Verrinder 2-11. Rayleigh win by 57 runs.

 

Sir Garfield (Gary) Sobers visit cancelled.

Gary Sobers, famous West Indian captain and all-rounder (1954 -1974) was due to visit the Club on Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to watch some of our youngsters playing and then answer questions.  Unfortunately I have just had a call to say Gary has been taken ill and is terminating his UK tour so will not be coming.  He hopes to come to the UK next year and we are on the list of Clubs for him to visit.

Winning the toss the 1st XI asked their visitors, Chignal to bat first on and by virtue of a lot of dropped catches allowed them to total 175 all out, Jon Cook taking 5-39. In another disappointing performance with the bat, they were bowled out for 88, only Jason Ox (29) troubling the scorers.

The 2nd XI match at Great Totham was called off without a ball being bowled due a waterlogged pitch.

The 3rd XI entertained Rettendon 2nd XI who batting first scored 167-7, Adam Dudmish taking 3-53. At 114-6 Rayleigh looked in trouble but a 7th wicket patnership between Matt Verrinder (35*) and Adam Dudmish (27*) saw them home by 4 wickets.

The 4th XI visited Navestock & Ardleigh Green 2nd XI who batted first and scored 162-5. Rayleigh were 3-1 when the heavens opened and the match was abandoned.

The 5th XI visited top of the league Billericay St Johns 2nd XI and batting first totalled 158 all out, Adam Keeley (74) and Duncan Bond (32) top scoring . With Rayleigh sportingly carrying on bowling in the wet, the home side passed the required total for the loss of 7 wickets, Andy James taking 2-41.

The Saturday 6th XI entertained Rayleigh Fairview 4th XI at Gloucester Park, Basildon and batting first struggled against some accurate bowling and finished their 40 overs on 110-9, Nick Buckley (30) and Mike Humphrey (13*) being the only batsmen to reach double figures. In reply Fairview were soon in trouble with a fine spell of bowling from Conor Slough (3-10 off 5 overs) but at 43-5 a third heavy shower meant the pitch became unsafe for further play and the match was abandoned as a draw.

The Women & Girls XI match at Kelvedon was called off without a ball being bowled due heavy rain on Friday afternoon and evening.

Pegasus & Corringham U15A 106 all out, Josh Jones 3-6 Rayleigh U15A 107-7 Christian Humphries 36 retired, Gideon Humphries 20. Rayleigh won by 7 wickets with one ball to spare.

Seven Saturday teams fielded but only three wins. An excellent win for Women & Girls XI on Friday

Batting first the 1st XI were bowled out cheaply for 115 by their hosts, Springfield, only Neil Henson (27) managing a respectable score. Springfield passed this total for the loss of 2 wickets.

At Rawreth Lane the 2nd XI were asked to bat first by Springfield 3rd XI on a wet wicket and were skittled out for 81, which the visitors passed with ease for the loss of 2 wickets.

The 3rd XI visited Roxwell Blues and batting first scored 232-8, Steve Adams (55) and Alex Jones (44) top scoring. They then bowled the opposition out for 153, Tony Catling taking 5-31.

The 4th XI entertained Wickham and were 110-9 (Wratten 26) but a last wicket stand of 42 between Sam Levett and Ray Winney took them to 152. They then bowled the visitors out for 92, Paul Spratt (3-26) and Gary Bush (3-28) being the pick of the bowlers

The 5th XI played South Woodham Ferrers 3rd XI at Purleigh and batting first totalled 175-6, Adam Keeley (55). In reply the visitore were all out for 160.

The Saturday 6th XI (Dragons) entertained Westcliff 4thXI at Gloucester Park, Basildon and were asked to bat. At 70 for 3 off 23 overs, Nick Buckley (41), Rayleigh looked to be set for a reasonable score but some exceptional fielding by the visitors and a batting collapse saw them all out for 101, a total Westcliff passed for the loss of 5 wickets, Sam Verrinder taking 2-18 off 9 overs.

The Saturday 6th XI (Eagles) visited Chelmsford 6thXI at Admiral’s Park, Chelmsford. Chelmsford totalled 171-5, Matt Dobson taking 3-27. Rayleigh scored 153-9 in their 40 overs, Chris Slough (30) and Luke Sullivan (20) leading the reply.

(Note: The team names are taken from the Club and Town coat of arms, which depict a Wyvern – a mythical beast which is a two legged dragon with a gryphon eagle’s head and a lions body)

Beaumont Seymour League South Division. The Women & Girls XI played Woodham Mortimer at home a week after being heavily defeated by them a week earlier. On a cloudy and wet evening Rayleigh were put into bat and lost 2 early wickets. Rebecca Holyoak retired hitting 28 runs off 24 balls and after Sophie Lennox and Lorraine Frost saw off the opening bowlers Michelle King (22) and Francesca King (18) increased the run rate with a 40 run partnership to finish on 103-3. In reply Woodham were losing wickets but Meluish (27 retired) and Sleep (19) kept up to the required run rate but an excellent spell of bowling from Sophie Lennox taking 4 wickets for 7 runs saw Woodham finish on 86 all out. A brilliant performance from all the players involved and everyone played their part.

Warsop T20 league. Westcliff 158-6, Rayleigh 158-7, Matt Williams (44) and J Wall (52). Match tied.

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 15 League West Group. Horndon U15s 88-7, George Barker 2-17 Rayleigh U15A 89-3 Christian Humphries 35 retired. Rayleigh won by 7 wickets

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 13 League East Group. Rayleigh Under 13As 115-6, Max Jones 26 retired, Neil Kelly 25 retired and Matt Dobson 23. Old Southendians and Southchurch Under 13As 48, Luke Sullivan 3-5. Rayleigh won by 67 runs

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 13B League. Rayleigh Under 13Bs 108-3, Callum Bishop 26 retired, Alex Belcher 25 retired. Pegasus & Corringham Under 13Bs 48, Owen Brooks 2-10 Rayleigh won by 23 runs

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 11 East Group. Old Southendians and Southchurch Under 11As 266-10 net score 216 Rayleigh Under 11As 308-7 net score 273 , Rayleigh won by 57 runs.

Week ending 6 June

With several regulars missing, the 1st XI won the toss and asked visitors, Little Baddow, to bat. They scored 269-7 in their 45 overs, Ian Bryant taking 3-61. In reply Jon Cook (64), Matt Williams (35) and Marcus Cornish (28) were the only Rayleigh batsman to feature in an all out total of 194.

 

The 2nd XI visited Rainham 1st XI, who batting first knocked up 191-7, Ben Stevens taking 3-36. In reply the 2nd XI were all out for 179, Ewan Binneman (52) leading the scoring.

The 3rd XI visited Southend Ekco Monarchs & Trojans to play their 5th XI, who batting first scored 200-8. The 3rd XI slumped to 113-9 but a last wicket stand 65 between Phil Wolff (43*) and Matt Cooper (23) took them to 178 to lose by 22 runs.

The 4th XI entertained Rayne 2nd XI and batting first scored 218-7, Nathan Healey (59) and Darren Smith (45) top scoring. The visitors were bowled out for 60 with Graham Ilott taking 7 wickets for 10 runs.

The 5th XI were away to Havering-Atte-Bower 3rd XI and batting first on a difficult pitch were all out for 130, David James (37) and Phil Hammond (34) making the main contributions to the total. This total proved well beyond the reach of the hosts against accurate bowling by Adam Keeley (4 for 3 off 7 overs) and Neville Dunn (3-14 off 12 overs).

Other matches

Beaumont Seymour League South Division. The Women & Girls XI visited Woodham Mortimer who batted first and scored 107-3 with some excellent running between the wickets. In reply Rayleigh faced some very accurate bowling and were all out for 31.

Southend Evening League. Rayleigh 134-3, Ian Bryant 60* and Chris Eldridge (47). Spartans 121-9, Ian Bryant 4-11 and Ewan Binnerman 2-8

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 15B League. Rayleigh U15B 103-3 (20 overs) Nick Buckley 38 ret, Tom Peppiatt 26 not out. Wickford U15B : 84 all out (18.5 overs) Tom Peppiatt 2-6 off 3 overs Rayleigh won by 19 runs

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 13B League. Benfleet under 13B’s 119-4, Owen Brooks 1-14 off 4 overs. Rayleigh Under 13B’s 108-7, Joseph Peppiatt 19*. Rayleigh lost by 11 runs

South Essex District Cricket Board Under 11 East Group. Rayleigh Under 11A’s 260-6 net score 230 , Leigh Under 11A’s 270 – 5 net score 250. Rayleigh lost by 20 runs

Friendly matches.

The Saturday 6th XI entertained Harold Wood 6th XI at Gloucester Park, Basildon. Winning the toss and unusually deciding to bat first this decision didn’t look too good as the 6s were 65 for 4 off 20 overs and finding runs hard to come by. A unbeaten 6th wicket stand of 71 between Chris Slough (60*) and Matt Dobson (31*) took the total to 150-5 off the allotted 40 overs. Despite some accurate bowling the visitors were well ahead of the required run rate but kept losing wickets and eventually ended on 116 all out with Jai Patel taking 3 for 25 and Conor Slough 3 for 35.

The Sunday XI travelled to Rettendon. who batted first in a 50 over game and scored 281-5. In reply Rayleigh scored 286-9 to win in the 41st over, Luke Snelling (104*), Paul Davies (52) and Matt Williams (45) being the main contributors to the total.

Week ending 29 May

T Rippon Mid Essex League Premier Division. The 1st XI were again shown how difficult life in the Premier Division was going to be as they were beaten at Aythorpe Roding by 68 runs. The home team batted first and scored 229-7, Ian Bryant taking 4-58. Marcus Cornish (36), Dale Farnham (34) and Ian Bryant (31) all contributed to the Rayleigh reply in the total of 161 all out.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. The 2nd XI entertained Purleigh and bowled them out for 149, Nick Green taking 4-48. The 2nd XI knocked the runs off for the loss of 8 wickets in a close finish with captain Chris Frost scoring 71* to lead the 2nd XI home.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 3rd XI entertained Mountnessing who scored 184-8 batting first with Tony Catling taking 3-48. The 3rd XI struggled in their reply and were all out for 146 with only Alex Jones (32) and Richard Verrinder (23) offering resistance.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. The 4th XI visited Gloucester Park for an away game against St Andrews. The home side batted first and scored 175-7. The 4th XI then overhauled this total for the loss of 6 wickets with Steve Elsdon top scoring with 76*.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 11. The 5th XI won their league match without bowling a ball as Eastwood conceded the game. In its place they played a friendly against Belhus 5th XI and won a close match by 10 runs. Rayleigh reached 158-9 in their 40 overs with Adam Keeley scoring 47. In reply Belhus scored 148 all out with the wickets shared between all of the 5th XI bowlers.

Beaumont Seymour League South Division. The Women & Girls XI visited Kelvedon & Feering. Rayleigh batted first and started well with Castle (28 retd) and M King sharing a good second wicket partnership. Tight bowling from Cowell, Butcher and Yates then restricted Rayleigh to 69-6 from their 20 overs. Rayleigh’s total was not adequate as Kelvedon’s N Wilson retired on 28 as the hosts reached the winning total with 8 overs and 7 wickets to spare.

South Essex District Cricket Board Peters Cup 2nd Round. Rayleigh Under 15’s scored 118 all out with Adam Krise (30*) and Gideon Humphries (27) being the main run scorers. Leigh replied with 121-7 winning a close game in the 19th over to move into Round 3 by a 3 wicket margin.

The Sunday XI entertained Ingatestone in a Warsop Sunday League game in what proved to be a high scoring match. Rayleigh, batting first, scored 277-4 with Jason Ox (124) and Liam Druce (107) sharing an opening partnership of 242. In reply Ingatestone scored 201, Adam Dudmish taking 3-7, to give the Sunday XI a 76 run victory.
