Robbie Baird – RIP

Robbie Baird RIP

It is with considerable sadness that I have to advise that Robbie Baird passed away last Saturday afternoon at Southend Hospital.

Robbie and his family were passionate supporters of the Club during the years up to and after the new pavilion was built. Robbie and Kim’s son, Craig, was a prominent member of our early Colt’s teams and later 1st XI. Robbie attended many matches and Kim provided the teas for the 1st XI home matches. As well as attending and helping organise many fund raising activities and events Robbie really enjoyed an after match drink while discussing the game and would often recite the story of his famous catch while filling in once at Woodham Mortimer when we were short. His one and only game.  Caught Robbie Baird, Bowled Craig Baird. He famously went onto to say….easy game this!

For the first ten years at our new pavilion Robbie’s sister, Elaine, landlady of the Broker public house in Leigh, was instrumental in getting the Club preferential prices for our bar. Robbie was very proud of the new ground project and Elaine provided all the original tables and chairs for our new pavilion. Craig’s Nan, Doreen, also made and presented the Club with an intricate tapestry to celebrate the opening of the pavilion and this still hangs on the west wall of the clubroom near the kitchen.

Robbie was a very popular member of the club and he will be greatly missed. I have sent condolences to Kim, Craig, James and Kirstie on behalf of all the members of the Club.
