1st XI vs Tillingham 5/6/2010

Batting for fun, fielding was glum.

That sums up the 1’s home game v Tillingham last weekend where the Rayleigh batting machine top scored over all 11 divisions reaching 328 all out in sizzling conditions. White top scored with a magical 104 with Cook chipping in with another half century. After 20 overs we were 150–1 and looking for over the 300 mark. Contributions came from the middle order too with Lynch 28, Cornish 23 and Henson 43 punishing the relentless Tillingham attack. Walsh got an invite to the party as well hitting 20 off 13 balls with top mooing and crafty edges pushing the score along. Such was the strength of the 1st XI batting line up Tex only featured at No. 11.

Tillingham were staunch in their defence and with Law’s barracking and grimaces it was going to be a long day in the field. Wickets came slowly to start but Law, Walsh and then Cornish took down the key batsmen to allow the rabbit hunters (Bryant and Cook) to wrap up the tail. Bryant was top poacher taking 5 wickets with Cook taking two late on to ensure we took maximum points

Fielding generally was lacklustre with dropped catches, half hearted efforts and plenty of overthrows (and Baird wasn’t anywhere in sight). Ox let the ball trickle over the boundary but couldn’t stop himself cart wheeling over the chicken wire headfirst, Law tried to jump the chicken wire only trip over and looked a complete lemon while Cook didn’t fancy taking a catch letting 3 slip through his mitts.

We won by 128 runs in the end but there’s still room for improvement.

Bring on Little Waltham next week, an early finish and an England win.

Rayleigh Women & Girls away to Old Chelmsfordians

The Rayleigh ladies made a great start on Friday with Lorraine, promoted to step in as captain for the evening, winning the toss and choosing to field first. Up to bowl first were Kerry and Zoe and the field all ready. Kerry took a great catch off her own bowling and then later a mighty throw at the stumps which took off the bails and another lady bit the dust. The entire field were doing great with Marie and her (b****) Louise K doing well behind the wicket with comments from fellow teammates with regards to Marie’s pink t***g.

Sophie and Kelly then came up to bowl with Sophie taking 4 wickets and 1 maiden and Kelly only let a few runs off her bowling. Next up to bowl were Jodie, Lorraine did a great job with their bowling and little Louise getting a wicket.

All the ladies did well in the field with a few little dives from some of them (I think this was just to get their whites dirty) well done Lorraine. Old Chelmsfordians ended on 105 for 7

The Rayleigh woman & girls then went out to bat with Kelly and Sophie opening the batting. Kelly took 12 runs before getting out with a lbw Marie then went out with a quick 15 before getting caught and bowled Francesca was then in with Sophie who could not be moved from the track the Rayleigh ladies were getting quite close when Sophie had to retire on 25. Amy then went in to bat and got a 4 not out with Francesca.

Rayleigh ended on 85 for 2. Well done to all of us.

We would also like to say a thank you to all those that came and supported us.

Rayleigh Woman & Girls are at home next week if you would like to watch the game 6pm start.

Maldon Ladies vs. Rayleigh Ladies

Its getting closer!

Friday evening saw the Rayleigh Ladies on the road again for our second league match away to Maldon. This time the weather was warmer but the sky was still heavy with dark clouds but thankfully it stayed dry. Maldon went into bat first and managed to rack up 114 runs in their twenty overs. Rayleigh working together in the field and keeping the run rate down. This week Rayleigh ladies took 3 wickets in the match, one each for Zoe, Lorraine and Jane. Great bowling figures for Zoe 17/1 from 4 overs. Also some impressive bowling from Louise H, don’t underestimate her size, she packs quite a punch!

1st XI vs. Ingatestone

Rayleigh visited Ingatestone last weekend with a resurgent team strengthened by the ever dependable Cook and Walsh. IB won the toss (calling tails) and decided to field. It was freezing.

Everyone contributed with Law taking two in two balls (again) and Walsh, Bryant and Cook all getting in on the act. Highlights of a good fielding display include: Baird wearing a hoodie under his top, Williams diving like he’d been shot, and yes Cornish letting the ball go under his hands for 4 (were we to rue that mistake later in the game??) We restricted them to 134 taking 8 overs from their allowance — loads of time, start the car and all that surely. Not with Rayleigh though, we made a thrilling game out of it, taking it to the wire.

Early wickets left Rayleigh up against it with Cook being the only man to make a decent contribution (58). LBW decisions went against us with 3 batsmen triggered on what was an unpredictable track. Cricket however is a team game and every run counted even Baird’s 1, Williams 3, Bryant’s 4 and Extras who had a fine innings.

Cook played well, within out him it would have been embarrassing but with only 16 runs to score he was bowled leaving Walsh and Law at the crease. It was spare pants at the ready as anything was possible. The old timers played crafty cricket nudging for 1s and putting away the bad ball with Law (senior old timer) taking the majority of the strike. Law ran a quick single with us still needing 4 to win putting Walsh on strike. It was all on Walsh and he came up with the skills to pay the bills! Bowler running in from the church end, pitched short; Walsh tips the ball over gully out of the fielders reach and trickles to the boundary — It was sublime, Roy of the Rovers time, calypso cricket … and Cornish’ earlier misfield was forgotten.

Rayleigh grabbed a nervy win, but they all count.

Man of the match Cook, Shot of the match Walsh, Asbo of the day Baird.

Weekly Round Up 9th May

Despite another wet and bitterly cold Saturday afternoon all five of Rayleigh Cricket Club’s league sides played and finished their games but recorded only one win.

The 1st XI visited Ingatestone and bowled the home side out for 135, Mike Law and Jon Cook taking 3 wickets each. What looked to be a relatively easy target proved to be almost too much but in a nail biting finish a tenth wicket partnership between Mike Law and Mike Walsh saw Rayleigh home by 1 wicket. Jon Cook top scored with 58.

In a game shortened to 35 overs the 2nd XI batted first and only totalled 110, Paul Dudmish scoring 28. Woodham Mortimer passed this total for the loss of 2 wickets.

The 3rd XI visited Mountnessing who batted first and scored 177 all out, Tony Catling 5-39 and Geoerge Barker 4-32 being the pick of the bowlers. Only Alex Jones (27) troubled the bowlers as Rayleigh collapsed to 77 all out.

Galleywood 2nd XI came to play the 4th XI and scored 205-4. Another tight finish looked likely whilst Brad Walker (57) and Simon Harwood (51) were at the crease but the required run rate increased in a shortened 40 over game and Rayleigh came up 11 runs short.

The 5th XI were put in to bat by Old Chelmsfordians 4th XI and for the second week running found the bowling of the opposition too good and totalled only 99, a score OCs passed for the loss of 3 wickets.

The Sunday XI entertained Old Chelmsfordians, who scored 217-7, Liam Druce taking 3-45. In reply Adam Vyse (101) scored a maiden century and Neil Dobson 27 to lead Rayleigh to victory by 3 wickets with 2 balls to spare.

The Women and Girls XI visited Great Waltham for their first league match on a dark and cold evening. Great Waltham scored 149-6, Michelle King taking 5 wickets. In the gloom Rayleigh totalled 68-5 (Sophie Lennox 21*).

The new midweek XI started with a win against Civic Centre scoring 101-9. Civic Centre replied with 81 all out, Ian Bryant taking 5-19.

The Under 15As played Rayleigh Fairview in the Peters Cup 1st Round. George Barker(33*) and Lloyd Sabatin (34) led the side to 109-3, Fairview replying with 98-9, Luke Keeley 2-9. The Under 13As played Southend on Sea Echo Monarchs Trojans (SOSEMT) in the Bradford Cup 1st Round and scored 114-2, Steven Lynch (30*). SOSEMT were bowled out for 29. Four South East Essex District Board league matches were played on Sunday morning. Benfleet batted first against the Under 13As and scored 75-9, a total the U13As passed with the loss of 5 wickets, Steven Lynch top scoring with 25. The Under 11As won against Benfleet U11s by 49 runs. The Under 13Bs lost to Hadleigh U13Bs by 10 wickets and the Under 11Bs lost to Orsett U11bs by 1 run.

Rayleigh Ladies away to Great Waltham

Rayleigh Ladies made a positive start to the new season with their first away match against Great Waltham.

The weather played its part in trying to dampen spirits however the light drizzle, wind and dark sky were soon forgotten when Michelle started taking wickets! Great Waltham went into bat first with a strong opening pair, they were soon racking up runs. Sophie was the first to take a wicket early on and this lifted the field. Michelle started bowling her overs just after half way and soon the bails were jumping off the stumps. Taking an impressive 5 wickets in the game she was named player of the match by the Gt Waltham ladies. Gt Waltham ended on 149 for 6. Rayleigh were looking good in the field and had on more then one occasion saved a boundary with quick fielding and lots of backing up.

Sophie and Michelle went to open the batting for Rayleigh and made steady progress in the near darkness and dropping temperature. Great Waltham took 5 wickets but try as they might could not get Sophie out who stayed in all 20 overs finishing on 21 not out. Rayleigh finished 68 for 5 and have been awarded 4 points (3 for taking 6 wickets and 1 for scoring over 60). Well done us!

Congratulations to all of the Rayleigh Ladies, the hard work put in over the winter months is really beginning to show as we move from strength to strength in our game. Looking forward to our next match on Friday away to Maldon, hope the sun make an appearance in this game!
