Rayleigh CC report – week ending 23July17

The weather spoiled the weekend for the Saturday League sides and interrupted several matches. Only one, three defeats and two matches abandoned and the weekend concluded with an enjoyable friendly match against an Alan Brown XI.

T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division.  The 1st XI hosted Bentley 1st XI who batted first scoring 244-8 with only Ian Bryant causing the visitors any problems taking 4-24. In reply Rayleigh started with a 51 run partnership between Will Nolde (25) and Adam Vyse (33) but then subsided to 156 all out. The only sunshine on a rain interrupted day was that the last two wickets added 52 with Luke Sullivan (36) and Sean du Plessis (20) scoring a few boundaries each.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2.  The 2nd XI visited Bentley 2nd XI and scored 43-5 before rain stopped any further play and the game was abandoned.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. Great Wakering were the visitors to the 3rd XI. Rayleighbatted first and found it impossible to recover from a disastrous start of 0-4 and were bowled out for only 41. The visitors easily passed this score for the loss of only 1 wicket.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI travelled to St Andrews batting first scored 82-8 when the rain came down. The only highlight of the innings was from John Wright who scored 43. No further play was possible and the game was abandoned.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8.  The 5th XI entertained Navestock 2nd XI, and having been asked to bat scored 190-5. This score was based on good knocks from Simon Harwood (33), Matt Verrinder (53) and Aby Jose (62*).  The highlight of the 5th XI bowling was 2-20 from Andy James’ 9 overs. This was well supported by tight bowling from the other bowlers which restricted the visitors to 150-5 and to give Rayleigh victory by 40 runs.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. The 6th XI travelled to Broomfield 2nd XI who batted first and scored 210-3 in their 40 overs. The Rayleigh reply started badly and at 32-5 it looked like an early finish. However, Jack Himpfen-Jones scored a superb 83* and helped the 6th XI to a respectable total of 148-6.

On Monday the Midweek XI ended a successful competition and won the Southend Evening Cricket League Cup with victory over Southend at Rankins.

On Sunday a Rayleigh Sunday XI took on an Alan Brown XI in a friendly match to celebrate his birthday. The AB XI scored 201 in their 40 overs and this was eventually overtaken in the 36th over to give Rayleigh a win by 4 wkts. Despite a rain break it provided a great end to a weather interrupted weekend.

Report for week ending 16th July http://www.rayleighcricketclub.org.uk/index.php/news/816-report-for-week-ending-16th-july http://www.rayleighcricketclub.org.uk/index.php/news/816-report-for-week-ending-16th-july

Five wins and one narrow defeat for the Saturday League sides and a very successful Women’s Soft Ball Cricket Festival on Friday evening.

T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division.  The 1st XI hosted Old Chelmsfordians 1st XI and batting first scored 232-8, Ben Francis (62), Jason Ox (50*) and Phil Everitt (32) leading the scoring. The visitors were behind the required run rate for most of their innings, which ended 70 runs short on 162, Ian Bryant taking 5-22 and Ian Turnbull 2-36. This result leaves the team in the relegation zone but now only 4 points behind Great Baddow and six behind Canvey Island.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2.  The 2nd XI visited Little Waltham 1st XI, who batted first and were bowled out for 183, Richard Abley taking 3-16, Lee Brown 3-23 and Dan Frost 3-30. Callum Ginbey (96) led the Rayleigh reply and the visitors passed their target for the loss of 3 wickets in the 31st over.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. Billericay St John’s were the visitors to the 3rd XI and batting first were bowled out for 163, Steve Adams 3-8, Will Wheeler 2-10 and Elliot Ward 2-39.  Steve Adams completed a day to remember scoring 88 and supported by Toby Turner (25) and Adam Sullivan (21) the 3rd XI won by 5 wickets.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 7. The 4th XI travelled to Southend to play Old Southendians and batting first scored 140-9, only Steve Gosling (36) mastering the bowling. The home side also struggled to score and with Nick Green taking 4-36 and Jai Patel 3-33 the finish was always likely to be tight. The home side had only one wicket left and still needed 10 runs to win but the last pair held out to spoil the cherished clean sweep of victories for the Club.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 8.  The 5th XI entertained top of the Division South Woodham Ferrers 2nd XI, and batting first scored 183-7. This score was founded on 39 from Matt Verrinder and Steve Rothon, who continued his excellent recent form scoring an unbeaten 82. He also shared an unbeaten partnership of 59 with Sam Levett for the 8th wicket. Tight bowling by Aby Jose (4-43) and Mihir Patel (3-21) restricted the visitors to all out score of 158 to give Rayleigh victory by 25 runs.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 10. The 6th XI travelled to Margaretting to play Galleywood 3rd XI who batted first and scored 175-5 in their 40 overs, Gary Bush taking 2-42. Phil Wolff rolled back the years scoring 100 not out and supported by Dave Turner (29) led the team to victory by 6 wickets.

Friendly match. The 7th XI travelled to Hatfield Peverel to play Great Waltham 3rd XI who batted first and scored 227-5 in their 40 overs, Kuldeep Paik taking 3-26. The 7th XI were bowled out for 96, Jack Andrews (34).

The weekend had a marvellous start when the Club hosted a Women’s Soft Ball Cricket Festival sponsored by the ECB and Essex County Cricket Board.  Approximately 100 women and girls attended and played three friendly games on four pitches spread around the outfield. The standard of play was excellent even though quite a number had never played cricket before but hopefully some of them will come to play cricket next year in the Essex Women’s Leagues.

In addition to the cricket there were other entertainments including a Bouncy Castle, Bucking Bronco, Sumo Wrestling and Water Slide followed by a live band to end the evening. Everyone who came seemed to enjoy the evening and thanks to all the people who organised the event and who were supported by excellent catering and bar staff. A brilliant evening.

In reply Alan Brown (53*), Steve Rothon (40), Simon Harwood (25) and Jon Chase (25*) steered Rayleigh to a six wicket victory in the 35th over.

A disappointing weekend with two wins and four defeats for the Saturday League sides and failure of our batting to achieve fairly moderate targets

T Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division.  The 1st XI entertained neighbours Rettendon 1st XI who batted first and scored 169-7 in their 45 overs, Luke Sullivan taking 3-37.  An opening stand of 50 between Adam Vyse (35) and Jason Ox (20) gave Rayleigh a promising start but the side collapsed to an all out total of 117 to give visitors victory by 52 runs.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 2.  The 2nd XI visited Goresbrook 2nd XI, who batting first scored 164-8, Chris Frost taking 3 wickets.  Only Callum Ginbey (43) mastered the Goresbrook bowling and the innings ended 12 runs short on 152.

T Rippon Mid Essex League Division 5. The 3rd XI hosted Writtle 2nd XI who batting first were bowled out for 149, Steve Adams taking 3-22 and James Wratten 3-32. This total proved too much for the 3rd XI who only managed to score 89, Mike Law 25* leading the scoring.

The Rayleigh innings started well reaching 41-1 but the introduction of the Pitchforth Brothers into the attack reduced Rayleigh to 49-9, Alex Pitchforth taking 6-2 off 6 overs.  A last wicket stand of 23 added some slight respectability to the final total of 72.

Beaumont Seymour Women & Girls Cricket League.  The team hosted Great Waltham and batting first Rayleigh scored 129-3, Sophie Lennox (28), Rebecca Holyoak (26) and Louise Harmsworth (25) all retired. The visitors scored 110-7 in their 20 overs, Rebecca Holyoak taking 3-27.
